I was just having a conversation with my friend about Bespin and he asked what the actual surface was like and I replied there is no surface it is just a bunch of gas in one area. So then he said Bespin was the same as Jupiter. Now I know we are far away from this but hey if we can now make little chips they digitaly display tattoes on our arms and let us use our own skin to go on the internet then why not this. Who here belives that we could eventuly make cloud city possible.

And let the debate begin.

Since you all know I'm actually NOT the biggest Star Wars geek...the city was interconnected buildings on long poles sticking up from the clouds, yes? So unless those poles themselves were levitating...don't they have to be supported on SOME kind of ground?

Reminds me of an Animorphs book in which they visit a planet where the Iskroot live on various platform levels (connected by very precarious staircases) high above the planet surface...the platforms are on poles connecting to the ground thousands on feet below, but the ground is unlivable.

Bespin is featured in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back over which the floating city Cloud City hovers suspended by an anti-gravity pod. Bespin is also a major source of tibanna gas, which is refined for production and transport in Cloud City and used in the production of starship blasters. It is home to several million individuals including humans and Ugnaughts.[citation needed]

The planet Bespin is a gas giant that is about 118,000 kilometres in diameter. Like most gas giants, it has a solid core made of metal followed by layers of metallic gases. Most of the layers of gas are poisonous, and the pressure and temperature are far above what a human could tolerate. But from approximately 150 to 180 kilometres down from space there is a habitable layer known as the Bespin Life Zone. This layer has an oxygen atmosphere with the temperature and pressure that makes it ideal for human life. It is in this layer that Cloud City is located.[2] Bespin has a number of moons. Bespin has a 12 hour day, and completes an orbit around its star about every 14 earth years (10220 Bespin days).

I think the difficulty of a cloud city is the pressure and gravity that such a giant planet contains. youwould need to be able to create a structure that would be able to handle the heat and presure that a gas planet would present.

I am sure that in time in hundreds of years we would be be involved in planetary mining operations. I ma sure it will bring about a whole new interesting concept in country territories, where different natiosn will claim territories on other planets .Eventualyl those territories will demand independence for Earth based government. because why should they follow the rules of a nation millions of miles away.....

you figure if in 100 years we went from horse drawn carriages to travelling tothe moon... then jsut think what hte next several hundred years will bring..

so i think whne it comes to humans . if we can mine it .. we will..

Did not Buckminster Fuller design a floating city inside a dome that worked like a giant hot air balloon?
